DSDW Toddler Dance Classes

Your Little Dancer: A Parent Guide to Dance for Young Ones.

Is My Child Too Young For Dance Class? Every child is different and every child’s experience will be different; but starting young can have a huge positive influence on their life (there is so much that your child can gain from dance and the arts). Your child is never too young to start moving and grooving to music! We offer Parent and Me classes you can start with your child as young as one year old!

Is Your Toddler Ready For Dance Class? Don’t Give Up If…

  • Dancer walks into studio independently
  • Dancer participates when he/she is invited to join an activity
  • The teacher gives him/her a job and he/she does it
  • Dancer watches the teacher or participating children during class
  • Dancer takes a prop when given
  • Dancer cries but also participates
  • Dancer stops crying for a certain activity
  • Dancer observes other classes with excitement
  • Dancer talks about dance at home
  • Dancer dances and does class activities at home
  • Parents are supportive about working with teacher during separation process

Maybe Needs a Change If…

  • Crying on the way to dance class does not end after 3-4 weeks
  • Teacher has to take him/her from parent’s arms after 3-4 weeks
  • Dancer seems sleepy and irritable due to time of class (naptime, end of day)
  • Crying and no participation during the entire class does not end after 2-3 weeks
  • Dancer hits or kicks the teacher, assistant, or other students
  • Dancer runs for the door and tries to exit studio after 2-3 weeks
  • Dancer is distracting or upsetting other students in class after 2-3 weeks
  • Attendance is not consistent

Change could be…

  • Class on a different time or day
  • A parent/tot class
  • More time before dancer tries class again

Physical Benefits of Dance  Dance helps to develop balance, good posture, gross motor skills, and self awareness from a young age. It also strengthens the minor muscle groups along with the major muscles, so your child is getting a more complete muscular development. When a child enjoys a physical activity, they learn early on that working hard and exercising is a good and enjoyable thing!

Accelerated Learning  Children who take dance or participate in any kinesthetic learning process tend to do significantly better in school, pick up on complex concepts faster, have more patience during the learning process, and show more commitment and dedication to their area of study.

Important Life – Skills Dance builds confidence and is more than just about the mastery of the physical technique. We have a lot of fun in our toddler classes, however we are still learning very important life lessons. Below is a list of some important life skills your toddler will learn in her dance class:

  • Following specific and detailed instructions
  • Taking turns and being prepared when it is their turn
  • Awareness of what their body is doing in space and time and exploring the mind/body connection
  • Understanding rhythm, time, motion, pathways, stillness, and energy
  • The ability to control reactions and behaviors based on specific cues
  • Teamwork and respect for others
  • Important visualization skills
  • Commitment to following through with a task (not quitting or giving up in the middle of something)
  • Associate exercise and physical activity as a fun thing to do
  • Courage to do things on their own
  • Confidence to do something without their parent’s help
  • Positive Body Image
  • Appreciation for differences in others

We are excited to be offering new toddler classes at DSDW this year! Check out their class descriptions here! We also have events twice a month with different character visits. Be sure to check them out on our Facebook Page!
